Yesterday, I read a great story on ESPN about Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s courtship of the coveted free agent Lebron James. This story reveals a lot about Magic, his thoughts about business and life.
The title of the article is that he showed up 1 hour early for his meeting with LeBron James. He knew he couldn’t be late for the opportunity to convince LeBron to join the Lakers. He was getting one shot to get it right. There are no do-overs.
This is important for all professionals when courting new clients or really when meeting with anyone. When preparing for an important meeting with a potential client it doesn’t matter if you are 5 minutes late or 5 hours late. Everyone is busy and showing a lack of re2pect for your potential client’s time is like a slap in the face.
Follow the Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin rules for practices. If you are 5 minutes early you are late. You never know what life will throw at you when heading to a meeting. The line, sorry I am stuck in traffic is a poor excuse.
